Desh is one of my favourite ragas. It is elevating and happy and evokes a really happy nostalgia. The raga would remind you of your roots and happy things from the past. Some examples are themes around your culture, native place or themes that remind you of childhood or adulthood. That is the kind of nostalgia that desh evokes. Desh is also used for patriotic songs. "Vande matharam" is composed in desh raga. Karunam is also seen in desh compositions.

Personally i love alaaps in desh and i think its really nice to sing desh. Some ragas make you still or make you think but desh will make you sing and enjoy. From an ayurvedic perspective, I think it reduces kapha and promotes healthy vata based on the feel it evokes and the time when they typically sing this raga.

The first instrument that comes to my mind when i think of desh is sitar. In a hindustani setting tabla, sitar and some nice aalaps would be a great treat. Sitar, Veena, Sarod are popularly used for desh. Personally i like violin as well.

Desh is a janya of harikamboji. Harikamboji is the melakartha with maximum number of janya ragas and there are a lot of very popular janya raga siblings for desh.

In my personal view, Desh raga is the face of india for reasons like 'Vande matharam' and because of the manner in which it reminds you of your roots and your culture.
