The raga is smooth and mellifluous. This is one of the most popular ragas in the world. It is the C major scale in western musical system.  Since the notes are evenly spaced, it creates good melody. Grhabhedam of sankarabharanam yields kharaharapriya, Hanumatodi, Kalyani, harikambhoji, Natabhairavi. Due to the even spacing, this group produces maximum number of grahabhedams(6 in a group).

Since the notes are evenly spaced, there are many janya ragas derived from sankarabharanam. Some of the popular ones are

  • Mohanam
  • Hamsadhvani
  • Suddha Saveri
  • Kedaram
  • Kurinji
This raga is the suddha madhyamam equivalent of kalyani.
